Wooden school building made of Kamiyama cedar that blends in with nature
A Small, New Educational Environment in the Community
Kamiyama Marugoto College of Technology is a newly established five-year private technical college that will open in the spring of 2023, offering courses in technology, design, and entrepreneurship. The school will have a single department of design and engineering, with one class of 40 to 44 students per grade, and a total of about 200 students in the five grades of the technical college, and a living space for all students.
When the establishment kickoff was held in Kamiyama in 2018, four and a half years before the opening of the school, the only thing that had been decided was to create a private technical college, the educational content and site were undecided, and there was no funding plan for the opening.
Kamiyama is well known for its regional development, but what is the value of building a new school in a community with a population of 5,000? The town is known for its regional development, but what is the value of building a new school in a community with a population of only 5,000 people? He hoped that the name would stand on its own and that the school would become a place where students naturally interact and learn from each other in the community.
Later, as the existing Kamiyama Junior High School, which was too large for the current number of students, planned to relocate, Kamiyama Town came up with a plan to transfer the school building to the newly established technical college, and the school began to think about how to utilize the existing school building.
On the other hand, in applying to the Ministry of Education for a new technical college, the required floor space and minimum expenses for a school are determined, and the floor space of the existing Kamiyama Junior High School was not enough to cover the necessary school building floor space and to provide a dormitory for approximately 130 students in the three grades to be secured in the first year of operation. The school had to acquire a new school site. After many twists and turns, it was decided in the early winter of 2019 to select a site for the school, which was a field on a river terrace in the Ohnochi district on the opposite bank of the Akui River that runs beside Kamiyama Junior High School.
After considering a number of scenarios, the overall vision for the opening year campus finally came into view at the end of 2020, with the "Nishikamikaku School Building and Student Dormitory" renovating the existing junior high school building into a living space and part of the school, primarily a student dormitory and student cafeteria, and the newly built one-story wooden "Ohnoji School Building" as the main educational site on the former rice field site of Ohnoji. The end of the year is in sight.
The Nishijo-kamikado school building, facing each other across the Ayukuro River, is simply named "HOME" and the Ohnoji school building "OFFICE" as a place to live and study, and the two places with different environments given to each can be used as a continuum for students by coming and going. The architectural design was intended to strike a good balance between individual and common design, so that students would have a varied and continuous experience of time and space, while at the same time creating a sense of unity.
At the time of the school's conception, we thought it would be important for students to have "the ability to think from their immediate community and daily life and take action that will be useful somewhere in the wider world. For example, by thinking in Kamiyama, utilizing what I had thought when I was with RCR Architects, based in the region of Spain, this project would nurture people who could think in Kamiyama and act somewhere else in the world. This is the importance of thinking beyond the local community in both directions.
The educational environment of the region was created in cooperation with many people over a period of four and a half years, too short a time to build a new school, on top of the background of Kamiyama. I believe that it is the role of the designer to continue to look with hope at how this new campus will be used and what kind of future will be created in the world by the students who will leave Kamiyama in connection with the town.
